beach red yellow flag

As you hit the beach for a day of fun in the sun, you should also beware of warning flags that lifeguards post. One of the most familiar flags you'll encounter is the red yellow flag. This flag is intended to warn beachgoers of potentially hazardous conditions in the water, and it’s important to know what it means and how to stay safe when you encounter one flying on the sand.

Understanding Beach Flag Systems

Beach flag systems are employed to alert beach-goers of unsafe water conditions or other hazards. The red yellow flag, or double red flag, means the water is not safe to swim in and conditions such as strong surf or currents are present. The flag is an alert message to swimmers that they should not be in the water ーotherwise they might put themselves in a deadly (or at least injurious) situation involving drowning or other waterborne hazard.
